RA Pocket Shrine 87/? – The King of Hearts

There’s no better way of returning to my blog duties than writing a RAPS post! Invariably, it lifts my mood presenting one of those little love boxes, looking at the little scenarios contained within the tin, enjoying the imagery, and thinking of the recipients which already have received (or can look forward to receiving) these fun little dioramas. Occasionally a bit of guilty conscience goes along with the post. Like in this case.

What I am showing you today fits nicely with the news that the Extended Cut of The Hobbit is due to be shown in cinemas (and to arrive on DVD, I suppose?!). This is actually the Custom-Made Shrine from the Nepal Earthquake Relief Charity Auction in May. The then-still-unmade RAPS raised a staggering amount of money, and I very quickly received instructions from the most generous auction winner, D___, what she would like contained in her shrine. She was taken with the RAPS I threw into a raffle for the auction participants, the Dwarf King of Hearts. The idea and concept for her shrine came to me very quickly, and I had a tin in my stash that fitted the plan – alas, the execution took a bit of time, not least because I really put myself under pressure. For such a generous amount of money that was pledged in return of a shrine, surely it had to be good… As much as Guylty needs pressure to get her arse into gear, the over-sensitive artist reacts all too much like a mimosa when it comes to self-imposed standards… So, weeks and weeks later, I was finally able to send the shrine to her.

King of Hearts (6)

With the “King of Hearts” theme at the back of my mind, I went for a sparkly, red heart overkill. Now, does this give you a Royal Flush? I call that image the “porn dwarf picture”… there’s something very suggestive about the look and pose…

King of Hearts (1)

Instead of wielding his sword, Thorin is holding the key. To our hearts. And in his left hand he carries a fish. A fish??? Well, as majestic as Thorin is, I can never forget the cheeky guy who plays him – and who had such fun with fish…

Richard throwing a fish at Adam Brown – cheeky b…aby. Gif by Jas via Gratiana Lovelace

But ok, my kind of humour may not be D___’s, so I enclosed a golden heart which she can replace the fish with. For more interactive fun Thorin’s princess crown is removable, too – I like it at a jaunty angle…

For the bottom of the shrine, I chose the Bag End scene of Thorin’s first entrance. From what I have heard, that scene hit many Hobbit viewers like a stroke of lightning. Who is that guy?????????? *thud*

King of Hearts (5)

Doesn’t he look as if he’s proposing marriage? In fact he says “Gandalf…” eh, well, that puts a dampener on things *um* D___ can remove or replace the proposal, it’s made of magnets.

King of Hearts (4)

So there we have it – the King of Hearts, all for D___. I hope he is suitably majestic and worth D___’s bid.

Before we go, can I take the opportunity and ask your feedback and no, I am not using the poll option again…: I would not dream of ever expecting a final tally like the Nepal Relief Auctions’ and Donations’ again, and I also do not want to be presumptious and bank on your willingness to donate and participate in such charity drives, but I am wondering what your opinion is on another auction type of thing? I have been approached by a lovely fan who has sent me gifts to include in a charity drive/auction, and I do want to honour her wishes. Here are a few questions that I would love to have your feedback on. (You can also comment anonymously, if you want – money is always a sensitive issue. You may have to sign out of WP for that purpose, or access the site via a different browser.)

  1. When is the best time for another charity auction? I was thinking of a date around RA’s birthday. Too soon?
  2. For a change, should I auction it on ebay? Would that make it easier and/or extend the reach?
  3. Judging by the success of the custom-made shrine in the auction, is it better to only offer those, or should I put pre-made shrines on offer, too?

Right *slams table*. That’s the good mood back in place. My demanding visitor has left, and I am back in business. Damn, I still have the review of Hannibal 3×09 on my list. And reading up on all the reviews that have been written. And commenting and replying to comments. And answering the e-mails that have piled up. Eh, and I think there is also something called “work” somewhere on my plan. Um. Let’s get on with it.

  2. Awww, warm furry thoughts 🙂 Lively shrine as always, even though Thorin will never be my favourite chaRActer.

    An auction around the birthday would be fun! Have no thoughts as to the best format – whatever works best for you! 🙂

    • Furry thoughts, LOL. Yes, Thorin does not really invade my dreams as much as the human chaRActers, either. But I must say there is some yummy imagery out there…
      Thanks for the feedback!!

      • That should have read lovely, btw, though lively works too 😉 And I had been very naughty and skipped through the text to get to the pics (slapped wrist!) so only later did I realise this was the commissioned RAPS! Fabulous, I bet D is really happy 😀

  4. The King of ❤ and the naughty key … – Hattest du das wirklich nicht registriert?! 😀

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Eine Tube Senf von mir:
    1. Termin: Keine Ahnung, ob "um den Purzeltag herum" zu bald ist, und auch nicht, ob Urlaubszeit was ausmacht. – Ich würd's von der anderen Seite aus angehen: Wann halt Guylty Zeit?
    2. Ebay: Ich bin strikt DAGEGEN!!!
    Ich sehe da die Gefahr, dass es irrtümlich für was "Offizielles" gehalten wird, an dem Richard irgendwie beteiligt ist, über alles Bescheid weiß, das Ganze unterstützt … Finger weg! Das Szenario *schreit* geradezu nach Ärger!
    Was das Auktionsende angeht: Ich habe schon auf einigen Blogs diverse Countdowns gesehen – vielleicht wäre sowas machbar? Dann muss niemand umrechnen, 4 Stunden und 32 Minuten sind überall so ziemlich gleich lang. 😉
    3. Ich fand die fertigen Schreine schön bei der Auktion: Man hatte halt schon was vor Augen. Ich werde zwar nicht bieten, aber *wenn* ich es täte, wäre es mir lieber, vorher zu sehen, was ich möglicherweise bekäme. Jajajaja, schon klar: Der gute Wille zum Spenden war ausschlaggebend, und die Schreine waren eine sehr spezielle Form der Anerkennung. Trotzdem halte ich die Hürde für höher, wenn auf der anderen Seite kein deutlich sichtbares Zückerchen liegt – um's mal so zu sagen.
    • Ok ok, ich geb’s zu, fast nichts in meinen Schreinen ist dem Zufall überlassen. *hust*
      Und was das Kartenspiel angeht – ich habe unter den gefühlten 25 Kartenspielen extra nachgeschaut, welches nicht vollständig war. Bei einem wurde ich fündig. Bingo. Familienharmonie gerettet. Nicht auszudenken, wenn da was daneben liefe…
      Und vielen Dank für deine Anmerkungen zu meinen Fragen. Guylty hat ja eigentlich immer Zeit, insofern ist die Terminbelegung egal. Aber marketingtechnisch muss man sowas eben schon clever legen – in eine Zeit, in der die Leute noch/wieder Geld haben, z.B. – Das mit dem “offiziösen Charakter” von eBay ist ein guter Punkt. Huch, nee, nicht dass Armitage da sich noch irgendwie juristisch einschaltet oder so. Bloß nicht. Der hat damit nichts zu tun, außer dass er sein Gesicht unwillentlich zur Verfügung stellt. (Rein copyright technisch bin ich aber m.E: sowieso auf der sicheren Seite – meine Kästchen sind eine Collage, die sich so weit vom Original durch Zugabe eigener kreativer Ideen ändern, dass sie das ursprüngliche Urheberrecht nicht angreifen sollten…) Insofern ist die Privatauktion doch schon eher mein Ding.
      Ich finde selber auch immer gut, wenn ich die Katze nicht im Sack kaufen muss – ein fertiger Schrein ist in sofern transparenter…
      Danke für deine Meinung – das hilft mir weiter!
  5. hach that is soo good, i missed that hair in the wind king 🙂 Never get tired of it! 🙂 And nice contrast to the current bare to the bones look 😉 I am sure she will love it. I adore the crown and the little read heart and the key to so many more hearts cough 😉
    I think the auction is a great idea:
    – i sorta love the idea for it to be around his birthday, though it doesn’t have to, but it sort of holds sentimental value for me to as i saw him live in front of me for the first and only time then 🙂 Wipes tear from corner of eye 🙂 But any date will do, if better to wait after holidays that makes sense too, it will be something to look forward to.;
    – as place, i think ebay is saving a lot of effort and having to sort through offers. It could be labelled very clearly and make equally clear it is has nothing to do with RA, in fact his name doesn’t even have to appear in connection to this at all. Not sure. I am mostly thinking to bh of the enormous amount of work it means for you to be on your email all the time and sort it out and such, it would be nice if we could avoid that 🙂 It would be good if not on ebay somewhere or somehow where people could put their biddings through themselves and the order would be evident and you didn’t have to sort through… comments would work, but then it wouldn’t be anonymous… I wish i knew a site or some widget which would allow this somewhere else than ebay without you having to actually post it for each bidder and such… maybe somebody can come up with a viable alternative or we could just go for posting in comments as these would have timestamp… but there is no way to do so anonymously… I think given the time and organisation and anonymity advantages i would still lean towards ebay and i am sure you can call it something clear and no problem with communication. The alternative is for you to get all the hassle again 😦 or would people be willing to do it in blog comments and forego anonymity? I for one wouldn’t mind that for myself tbh.
    – ohh i’d love a combination of made and custom made shrines 🙂 My imagination is nowhere near as fertile as yours and i love your idea so a combo would be fun 🙂
    • Yep, the contrast between Thorin and Dolly could not be greater. Thorin is certainly much more cuddly than Francis… Well, and a perennial fan favourite, so I am happy to make him any time.
      As for your thoughts on the auctions – great, thank you for thinking it through for me. The whole issue of the work that is involved in organizing an auction, is ok for me. It is my contribution in the sense that I usually cannot invest money in charity, but time. I am willing to give that freely. However, I am not the most organized of people (well, I could be – I am German, after all 😀 , but I tend to be too lazy for that), and keeping track of everything was one of the things that I felt most concerned about last time. I just felt a lot of (home-made) pressure to get it right, and to not disappoint anyone. An automatic system like eBay would make that easier. But yes, it has that draw back of being slightly more official, and I really do not want to give the impression that anything I am doing is endorsed by Mr Armitage. Hell, I really do not want to attract his attention *at all*.
      The whole e-mail system worked fine last time, at least from my POV, it’s only the lack of anonymity that can be an issue.
      On “combo of ready made and custom made shrines” – I was just thinking it might be fun to make some shrines which have only one half already made and can be customized on the other by the auction winner. Hm, must think about that…
      Thanks for giving me your opinion on this!!! x
    • *seufz* Egal, wie narrensicher die Erklärung ist – irgendwer beweist fast immer, dass man ein noch größerer Narr sein kann … Die Skala der menschlichen Dummheit ist nach oben offen, fürchte ich.
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  6. I LOVE it! Just the right combination of breathtakingly sexy, majestic… and quirky with the fish! Not many men who could create temptation by tossing a fish… but this one… well… okayyesI’mseriouslyscrewed.

    Re: ebay auction… I personally don’t prefer it as I share an account with Hubby which might hinder me (though maybe that’s a good thing!). I was glad to see they’ve changed their privacy so that buyers can’t really tell too much information about other buyers they’re bidding against… used to be possible to see every item that other bidders were bidding on and through their reviews see other items that they’d bought. As far as I can tell, that’s changed now.

    • Thanks, J 🙂 I just can’t do without the “quirky”. I need the slight irreverence to distance myself 😀 But yeah, Thorin can toss *anything* and I’d still be enthralled. Or should that be “enthRAlled”?
      Very valid point re. joint eBay accounts. I think privacy is a huge issue with all this fan stuff – not least because of the whole shaming thing going on, Cumberbatch Hamlet the latest…

        • No, not really a brouhaha – more about articles that are talking about the fans who are going to see Shakespeare and wondering whether they will be able to deal with the fact that “Sherlock” will speak in rhyme… The usual condescending bullshit. But there was actually a really good article that argued the other way ’round: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-08-05/why-benedict-cumberbatch-fans-are-the-perfect-audience-for-hamlet Read it – it’s really good.

          • Oh, good. I thought maybe Armitage fans were shaming those lucky enough to have a ticket as if it were somehow disloyal to RA. That’s interesting that there will be no stage door autographs… I wonder if that means never, or just not on opening night. That’ll be disappointing to a lot of fans. But I agree, just because someone is crazy enough to travel long distances to see a favorite actor perform on stage (*coughs*) does NOT imply they can’t appreciate Shakespeare or theatre in general. Sheesh.

            Like

            • Afaik there is no autographing whatsoever. Sure, that is disappointing, but I also think it is very understandable. Sure, Richard did it every single night. But without disrespect to either RA or his Army – I think the Cumberbatch fandom is probably a good bit larger and the whole logistics/length of a stage door appearance much more difficult to maintain in a calm and orderly fashion.
              Oh, and judging by the reviews, the “Cumberbitches” did not jump the stage to take selfies with the man or broke into sobs every time BC entered the stage… Oh what a miracle *snarks*

  7. Loved the King of hearts. He certainly made mine beat a little faster even though there was something fishy about him. My feedback for charity auctions is “do what is easiest for you”. Whatever that is. If you are offering up items with a co-conspirator, then the more shrines the merrier. I don’t know about the auction timing. It seems there are always eager well-wishers wanting to get their hands on a RAPS and support charitable causes at the same time. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    • Something fishy indeed. Or maybe just his size? Or was it the guy who played him??
      Auction organization is fishy, too 🙂 In terms of work for me it is probably easiest on eBay. But my aim is to get as many people bidding as possible, so my own labour is not in the equation. We’ll see.

  8. I love the King of Hearts but happily for me I still love my Thorin RAPS best 🙂

    I think the auction could be any time you want. Since you do the work, you pick the time IMO.
    The only disadvantage I see to ebay is the fees. They even charge fees on the shipping (which has to be included BTW.)
    I love the idea of a combination of ready made and custom. Some of us are very creative and could come up with our own ideas and some of us happily enjoy the creativity of others. This way everyone is included, no matter their level of creativity.

    I do love the idea of charity RAPS. Tree 😀

    • I think your own RAPS is definitely always the best RAPS 🙂
      Arrrgh, fees. Very very good point. Ha! No, we don’t want fees. We want all the money to go to good causes, so that’s a major drawback for using eBay. Thanks for pointing that out, Tree!

  9. Why don’t you just make two auctions?
    One on ebay for a pre-made shrine (maybe a “Proctor” one for the date of the last show on september 13?) and one off-ebay for a custom-made one?
    This way you could “test the water” – I do like bidding on ebay 😉 …

  11. Needless to say…….but I will anyway, I love that RAPS! It’s reminiscent of my own of course and I’m still pretty chuffed about winning it.
    I think another charity RAPS is always a good idea, and on his Birthday sounds good, although any date would work as long as you’re not under pressure. I don’t know about where to auction it, you’d best decide what suits you best. The idea of having finished, made to order and half finished RAPS sounds great. xx

    • Glad you like this one – it’s definitely similar to yours, with the “King of Hearts” scroll.
      I might try this out, the “progression of RAPS” – from a completely open RAPS to a half-finished one and a ready-made one. Thanks for adding your opinion!

  12. Love the foil banner touch — fantastic!

    re: eBay, if no one has said this already, and probalby you already know, we looked into this once for King Richard Armitage. They have rules about charity auctions. Either you have to be able to prove you have non-profit status or you can’t say anything about the charity goal on the eBay auction site.
